Our Process — How Therapy Works at LOOP

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’ve never done it before.
This page is here to help you understand what to expect and how we work, so you can feel confident and supported from day one.

Our Approach

At LOOP, we take a relational, collaborative and integrative approach to therapy.

This means we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. Instead, we tailor therapy to you, combining modern psychology with a deep understanding of attachment, development, and the mind–body connection.

We’re highly skilled in building strong therapeutic relationships, which research shows is the single most important factor in creating lasting change. Our role is to help you understand your challenges in the context of your story, your past experiences, patterns, and relationships, so that you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

First Sessions

Your first two to three sessions are focused on getting to know you, exploring your history, your goals, and what’s brought you to therapy.

This is an important stage of information gathering, where your therapist begins to understand the patterns and context behind your current experience.

After this, your therapist will share their reflections (called a formulation) and provide a treatment recommendation, which usually includes a suggested frequency and duration for therapy. Together, you’ll set collaborative goals that guide your ongoing work.

Our Framework

Our work draws from a developmental and attachment-based framework, with a focus on:

  • Understanding the patterns that shape how you think, feel, and relate

  • Recognising the influence of early experiences on present behaviour

  • Building awareness and compassion for your emotional responses

  • Strengthening your connection to self and others

We also take a somatic, or ‘bottom-up’ approach to change, which means we work with both the mind and body.
If change were as simple as just talking about things, you could do that with a friend. Our therapy goes deeper, helping you shift long-held emotional and physical patterns.

Consistency

Therapy is most effective when it’s consistent and reliable.

Research shows that weekly sessions tend to create faster and more lasting change, as regular contact helps maintain trust, safety, and momentum between sessions. That said, fortnightly therapy is still valuable, especially when weekly sessions aren’t practical or financially sustainable.

Your therapist will collaborate with you to find a rhythm that feels supportive and realistic for your life, because the best progress happens when therapy feels doable and consistent.
