What is a Sense of Self?

A sense of self is like a personalised GPS that guides you through life's winding roads.

It's the internal compass that helps you navigate your experiences, feelings, and thoughts. It's the core of who you are, the essence that makes you unique, and the foundation upon which you build your identity.

Think of it this way: Just like every person has a unique fingerprint, every person has a unique sense of self. It's what makes you, you. And as you journey through life, your sense of self evolves and changes.

What exactly is a sense of self?

At its simplest, a sense of self is the understanding you have of yourself as a person. It encompasses everything from your personality traits and preferences to your values and beliefs. It's a complex combination of factors that shape your identity, including your upbringing, culture, and life experiences.

But a sense of self isn't just a static concept. It's something that develops and changes throughout your life. For example, when you're a child, your sense of self might be based largely on your family and your environment. As you grow and experience more of the world, your sense of self expands to include your relationships, your achievements, and your beliefs.

Having a strong sense of self is important for many reasons. It helps you make decisions that align with your values and goals, and it gives you the confidence to pursue your dreams. It also helps you build healthy relationships with others, since you have a clear understanding of who you are and what you want.

On the other hand, lacking a sense of self can leave you feeling lost, confused, and disconnected from your true self. Without a clear understanding of who you are, it can be difficult to make decisions or feel confident in your choices.

How do you develop a sense of self?

The answer is simple: through self-awareness. By becoming more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, you can begin to understand what makes you unique and what's important to you.

Here are some tips to help you develop a stronger sense of self:

  1. Take time for self-reflection: Spend some time each day reflecting on your thoughts and feelings. What are you passionate about? What makes you happy? What are your values and beliefs?

  2. Try new things: Exploring new experiences and activities can help you discover new passions and interests, which can in turn shape your sense of self.

  3. Embrace your strengths and weaknesses: Nobody's perfect, and that's okay! Embracing your strengths and weaknesses can help you understand yourself better and build a stronger sense of self.

  4. Surround yourself with positive people: The people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on your sense of self. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you.

  5. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally can help you feel more confident and grounded, which can in turn strengthen your sense of self.

  6. Engage in therapy. The therapeutic process is geared towards building our sense of self so that we can finally live confidently and joyously. If you’re interested in therapy, book your free 20 minute introductory call using the button above.
